Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Known For Her Role in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dies at Age 89.
This award-nominated actor Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran left us at the age of 89.
This actor, whose filmography spanned Chinatown, died at her home at her Ojai, California home. The news was revealed through a message by her offspring, award-winning actress her daughter Laura Dern.
Her daughter, who appeared with her mother in several movies such as Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, described her as “my incredible hero and my special gift of a mother”, noting that she was present when she passed.
“She was the greatest grandmother, mother, daughter, star, artist and caring individual that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she stated. “We were lucky to have her. Her spirit soars with angels.”
Initial Roles and Rise to Fame
Her initial acting years featured small roles on television series like Gunsmoke and that decade had her appearing alongside Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.
In the same year, 1974, she appeared alongside Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese praised dramatic comedy the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category.
1980s and Beyond
In the 1980s, she appeared in the thriller Black Widow, a suspense story as well as comedy sequel Christmas Vacation while also joining Alice, a television series inspired by the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the subsequent decade, she earned an additional best supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her role in Lynch’s Wild at Heart where she acted as the mom of her real-life daughter Dern’s character. A year later she obtained an additional nod for her performance in Rambling Rose, another movie which also starred her daughter.
“This movie that the late Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she invited Laura and I to the UK for a premiere and a party for us,” Ladd shared about the film Rambling Rose. “And she sat between us, taking our hands, and crying, watching us perform.”
The 1990s also saw roles in the comedy Cemetery Club, a film joining her again with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a political comedy, with John Travolta and Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth where she played Laura Dern’s mom another time. The decade also saw her score Emmy nominations for roles on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.
Partnerships with Her Daughter
She continued to star alongside her daughter in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, David Lynch’s the movie Inland Empire and the series by Mike White satirical show Enlightened, a TV series. She was also seen with Sandra Bullock, a star in 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in The World’s Fastest Indian plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.
Her more recent television parts included the series Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon, a comedy.
Writing and Directing
She additionally penned and helmed the comedy film Mrs Munck which starred herself and previous spouse actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a talented star,” she mentioned. “I’m privileged to have directed him on a project. In fact, I am the sole female in history to direct her ex-husband. I make a joke: ‘I say ladies, if you seek payback, helm a movie with your ex.’ However, I’m joking.”
Personal Life
She happened to be a family member of playwright Tennessee Williams, who she called “a significant impact throughout my life”.
In 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with lung disease and advised her life expectancy was six months yet she recovered completely when her daughter transferred her to another medical facility.
