Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this charming family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
