Club Championship Creates an Injury Trail That Is Damaging Soccer. Will Anyone Listen?
Cole Palmer's and O. Dembélé's pictures atop Top of the Rock before the Club World Cup championship match appeared impressive, but it isn't wise to propose that both could have gained more from summer rest than play.
Top athletes struggling with fitness issues was predictable before FIFA's expanded competition kicked off. Jürgen Klopp called it “The poorest idea in history,” citing concerns over lasting impacts of squeezing more games into an already packed schedule. Klopp stated, “Last year it was the Copa América and the European Championship, currently it’s the Club World Cup, next year it’s the World Cup. That means insufficient rest for the participants taking part.”
European football's governing body allowing domestic games abroad represents a sad turning point, ending soccer as we have understood it.
It was not the wildest of predictions. The schedule was already under strain due to overcrowding from the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2022 global championship being held in winter, and the Champions League increasing in scale. The global players' union has consistently cautions about rising physical issues and player burnout. Yet, the response has been to add additional football. Authorities do not take participants and managers with concern. The risk is that the best players have little remaining in the tank when the World Cup – expanded to 48 teams for the initial time – takes place in North America, Latin America, and the US next year.
Cole Palmer Case: A Star Pushed Too Hard
Palmer is the obvious example. The 23-year-old was the inspiration for his club at the global tournament, destroying Dembélé's Paris Saint-Germain in the final, but he has barely been seen recently. The belief is that he has played too much. He has been troubled by a pelvic injury for a year and, while there is no sign that the forward needs an operation, it is difficult not to think that he is, as Arsène Wenger once said of Jack Wilshere's case, in the danger area.
This could be cause for alarm. A Chelsea or England match without their star is a diminished experience. He is an exceptional talent, but all individuals has physical boundaries. It is absurd that Palmer has passed three consecutive off-seasons without a adequate rest. He helped the national Under-21s to win the continental title in 2023, was prominent when the first team reached the Euro 2024 final, and was still turning out for his club until the midpoint of July previously.
At What Point Does It Become Excessive?
Palmer played 57 games for Chelsea and England in the 2023-24 season, his debut complete season as an regular international and English top-flight player. He skipped the league phase of the Conference League then but was participating in the elimination rounds and was best player when the Blues beat Real Betis in the final at the close of spring. The PSG match was his fifty-fifth of the term. He had also represented England in their World Cup qualifying match against Andorra at the beginning of summer.
Therefore, do not be surprised that Palmer has missed a large number of games this season. His is a longstanding issue, but it certainly could have been addressed if he had been granted a holiday last summer. It isn't a controversial argument. Chelsea received no preferential handling; the club had a shortened, 14-day pre-season. The PSG fixture was on July 13, and Palmer started when a weary, unprepared side started the campaign by tying 0-0 with the London rivals on 17 August.
Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold is out with a ruptured thigh muscle after participating in the global event after a draining season for his former club.
Enzo Maresca was uncertain to predict how the additional fixture load and absence of preparation period would affect his players. By now, however, it is evident that Chelsea are facing difficulties. Levi Colwill ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament on the first day of summer training. L. Delap ripped a muscle against Fulham, Dário Essugo has had an operation on a thigh injury. T. Adarabioyo and A. Santos are injured. Moises Caicedo, E. Fernández, and João Pedro are competing despite the discomfort.
Players' Union Report and Team Reactions
The union's annual athlete fatigue report found that participants who competed in the Club World Cup after completing a national competition campaign were among hundreds at the top of the men's game who failed to have adequate summer breaks, hurting playing levels and increasing the chance of injury. Recently Maresca commented in relation to the number of injuries at Chelsea and PSG: “Perhaps it’s some consequences from the expanded competition.”
Will anyone listen? The Gunners' Noni Madueke, who left Chelsea after the Club World Cup semi-final, is sidelined for two months with a joint problem. PSG were missing Marquinhos, Kvara Kvaratskhelia, Desire Doué, and Dembélé when they beat Barcelona last week. Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz have also had fitness issues. The French club were returning in action in the Uefa showpiece on 13 August. The show goes on.
Real Madrid’s Fitness Crisis
Additionally absent at the moment are the Spanish club's T. Alexander-Arnold and Jude Bellingham. Alexander-Arnold came off a draining title-winning campaign with Liverpool, signed for Madrid, featured in their run to the last four of the Club World Cup, and is out with a torn muscle. Thomas the manager was stating in May that Bellingham ought to have had an operation on a shoulder injury. The procedure was put off, though, with the demands of the schedule leading a further emerging player to persevere and keep going.
The Reasons Deny the Evidence?
Why deny it? A few people have pointed out that players not involved in the competition have too had injuries. This is not an sufficient justification for the Club World Cup. Players will get injured. Injuries and fatigue have been on the rise. It nonetheless feels insufficient when governing bodies are forcing in more matches, effectively jeopardising the entertainment they wish to sell. The football, remember, is inferior if the top stars are absent or worn out.
