A significant industrial complex located on the outskirts of the capital is dealing with radioactive contamination following a government team detected traces of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing plants inside the area, that encompasses businesses that export frozen seafood.

The finding has triggered emergency cleanup operations and the relocation of nearby residents, following a similar pollution alert in the US that was traced back to the Indonesian facilities.

An important international store chain is one of the companies that have recalled products from their stores following the discovery.

Probe and Detection of Pollution

The country's authorities launched an inquiry after the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a shipment of chilled coated shrimp sent by a local company.

The FDA released an warning instructing distributors and retailers to dispose of the goods and not sell it, although the found amount was well under the agency's action limit. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had detected would not pose an immediate hazard to the public.

The authority explained: “The primary health effect of worry after longer term, ongoing small amount exposure (for example through consumption of polluted products or water over time) is an increased risk of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Pollution and Health Checks

Radiation tests showed at least twenty-two plants in the manufacturing area were contaminated. The Indonesian team did not identify the 21 other manufacturing facilities, but confirmed they would promptly receive cleanup procedures conducted by Indonesia's nuclear agency.

The environment minister stated that residents living in highly polluted zones would be relocated until the site was cleaned, emphasizing that the safety of the residents was the “main concern”.

Health authorities additionally performed examinations on nearby employees and residents located near the manufacturing estate, identifying 9 individuals who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. They were sent to a medical facility before being allowed to go back.

Cleanup and Isolation Measures

The contaminated locations will immediately undergo cleanup procedures by the national nuclear institute. Officials have also selected the site of a scrap metal factory as an isolation facility for contaminated goods.

Indonesia, which has no atomic energy facilities or arms programme, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the nation from abroad.

Origin of Pollution and Trade Limits

A taskforce spokesperson informed reporters that recycled metal imports were the probable cause of pollution and announced the government would immediately enforce limits on scrap metal arrivals. He said that vehicles were also being checked for possible exposure as they traveled through the area.

Caesium-137 is a hazardous radioactive element that usually enters the environment as a consequence of nuclear testing or incidents, such as Fukushima or Chornobyl. Trace quantities are present in soil, food and air.
