Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his plan to back Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after months of public tension between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Just last month, Adams had strongly criticized the former governor, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a recent development, Adams changed his position, announcing he now plans to support Cuomo in communities where he holds strong support.

“I think that it is imperative to really wake up the communities of color that have been affected by gentrification on how critical this election is,” Adams remarked.

He added, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise in terms of gentrification and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”

Race Dynamics and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been shaped by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has made headlines worldwide and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.

In a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent announced they would refuse the mayor's support if extended.

Months ago, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor answered reporters asking about the support announcement by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”

This development came a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated candidate debate.
