Our team is verifying images and video posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location from which the images were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
