Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
