Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 people perished and over 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
