Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison

He contested the law and justice prevailed.

Two months following getting a quarter-century plus sentence for trying to “eradicate” the nation's democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro now looks destined for incarceration.

Imminent Jailing

The adjudicated coup-monger – who has been under home confinement in his residence while a series of court processes and challenges proceed – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the near future, during increasing rumors that he will be moved to a notorious top-security prison.

Past Statements on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the conservative ex- military man exhibited minimal compassion for Brazil’s inmates.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, said he predicted the elderly politician to be jailed in the next 10 days and worried his location could be Papuda.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells accommodating forty detainees: “It's practically one meter squared per prisoner.

“We conversed to the inmates and they complain, of course, of the horrible food,” continued the senator.

Allies Voice Concerns

He is not the only voice speaking out ahead of the one-time head of state's expected incarceration.

Authoring in a prominent daily, a different supporter, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and asserted Brazil was about to see “the largest unfairness in its history”.

“It represents an injustice that eats away the souls of many Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed Popular Response

This could be accurate considering the substantial backing Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. Yet his expected imprisonment has also pleased the spirits of numerous other people who feel he should be incarcerated for planning to block the incoming president from becoming president – and additionally plotting to have him murdered.
