Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side

The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.

Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack

The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Carrington

Securing the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further business:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
