Missing Johann Sebastian Bach Pieces Performed for First-Ever Performance in 320 Years

Historical organ composition
The composer is considered to have composed the pair of organ works during his early years

Previously unknown organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach have been unveiled and executed in the European nation for the first time in over three centuries.

The nation's Cultural Affairs Minister the cultural official labeled the finding of the two pieces a "great moment for the global music scene".

They first caught the attention of a musical scholar in 1992 when he was organizing the composer's papers at the Royal Library of Belgium.

The organ works - the Chaconne in D minor and G minor Chaconne - were without dates and unsigned. Mr Wollny spent the next 30 years working to verify the origin of the pieces.

Memorable Concert

They were played at the Thomas Church in the eastern German municipality, where the composer is interred and where he served as a cantor for twenty-seven years.

The two pieces were executed by Dutch musician Ton Koopman, who said he was privileged to be able to present them for the initial performance in three hundred twenty years.

He said the compositions were "of a very high quality" and would be "a valuable resource for contemporary organ players, as they are also well-suited for smaller organs".

Historical Significance

They are believed to have been created at the beginning of Bach's professional life, when he was working as an organ instructor in the town of the Thuringian town in central Germany.

The scholar, who is now the director of the musical archive in the city, said they demonstrated several qualities unique to the musical genius.

"Stylistically, the pieces also feature aspects that can be observed in the composer's creations from that era, but not in those of other musicians," he said.

They are thought to have been transcribed in 1705 by one of Bach's pupils, Salomon Günther John.

At a revealing of the works, the researcher said he was "virtually certain that the composer had written the pair of works" and they have now been added into the authoritative listing of his musical output.
