The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

An recent term came to light a couple of months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is unique to Gaza, as stated by doctors such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is unusual for physicians to treat a minor who has seen the death of their complete family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare Despite a Reported Truce

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that genocidal acts are ongoing. Authorities rejects these allegations, consistent with how it denies everything it is accused of. But while young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, we are told, is what international harmony looks like.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of someone in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. An institution that initially championed togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
