For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive in a realm of memories forged from the past of Vecna. Their quest for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—a moment that could contain the means to overcome him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

When she finds Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy find an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.

Similar to other plot points this season, the significance of the encounter originates in the live show the prequel play.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

The play reveals the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a plane known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to hand over to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their parallel research. This spy in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is understood of his research, the container most likely held some of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the case could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later as a different person. From then on, he fights the control of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was controlled by the entity in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine highlights how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to gain strength.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the endgame conflict to come.
