Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.

The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.

Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.

Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
